Artist: Egon Schiele
Nationality: Austrian
Born: Tullin 1890
Died: 1918
Bio: Known for his disturbing nude portraits, Schiele was briefly imprisoned for obscenity in 1912. However, it was Egon Schiele's art teacher who recognized his artistic talent and in 1906 he attended the Vienna Academy of Arts and Crafts. However, he left 3 years later, finding it too conservative and concerned with tradition. Upon leaving he formed the "Neue Kunstgruppe" (New Art Group). In 1907 Egon Schiele met Gustav Klimt. Whilst Klimt was undoubtedly a major influence, Schiele soon developed his own artistic style.
During 1911/12 Schiele paintings were marked by death and decay. In 1910 he had written that everything was "living dead" ("lebend tot"). It seems that the terrible suffering often inflected upon innocent people fascinated him.
In 1916 a new artistic period began; during which is works showed a more obvious realism. The two last years of his life saw Schiele as an acclaimed portrait painter. On October 31st, 1918 Egon Schiele died of the Spanish influenza, his pregnant wife Edith, who was six month pregnant at the time, having succumbed only 3 days earlier. |
