Artist:
Georgio Morandi
Nationality: Italian
Born: 20th July 1890
Died: 18th June 1964
Bio: Georgio Morandi displayed his artistic talents
at a very young age and in 1907 he enrolled at the Academy
of Fine Arts. He first exhibited in 1914 and participated in
the well known 5-artists exhibition with Licini, Bacchelli,
Vespignani and Pozzati.
A teaching career culminated in 1930 when he was given the
chair of engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna.
At the Rome Quadrennials in 1939 he had an entire room with
42 oil paintings and several drawings and etchings. He won
second prize.
Morandi was described by the surrealist artist Giorgio de
Chirico as a "metaphysical painter of the common object".
Morandi celebrated detail of the ordinary and the humble
although later still life paintings became more abstract
unified by color and atmosphere.
Morandi was internationally highly respected and acclaimed
and many of his works appeared in Exhibitions throughout
Northern Europe and the USA.
