Artist:
Jackson Pollock
Nationality: American
Born: 1912
Died: 1956
Bio: Jackson Pollock.
Pollock is the foremost member of the first
generation "Abstract Impressionists" which
came to maturity just after World War II. Apart form a
few sympathetic early reviews by Robert Coates and
Manny Farber one should not forget the bumpy start to his
career.
Reviews ranged from those who saw in
his art America's catching up with the 21st century and
those who could not fathom what it was in his drips and
spatters that could be called art. Slowly the mainstream
press came to accept what the finer critics saw in his work
and he is now known as one of as probably the greatest
twentieth century American painter.
Much has been written about Pollock
and it makes for a very interesting read, a good reference
source is the biography by B. H. Friedman
"Jackson Pollock: Energy Made Visible" published
in 1972.
