The death of his mother before he came to taste success was a devastating blow to him. He frequently used phrase of Laurie's was "that it all came too late" referring to the fact that his mother didn't get to see how successful he had become.
Today Lowry is known the world over as the man who used to paint "matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs" and for scenes depicting working class northern England.
