Artist:
John Singer Sargent
Nationality: American
Born: 1856
Died: 1925
Bio: Born in Florence, Italy to American parents he
was a celebrated portraitist and painted two Presidents of the
United States.
Sargent studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and was
heavily influenced by the Impressionist movement. During his
lifetime he completed over 900 oils and more than 2,000
watercolors along with a large number of charcoal and pencil
drawings,
At the 1884 Paris Salon, Sargent showed his now famous picture
Madame X, the portrait of the 23-year-old American Virginie
Gautreau. Virginie's extravagant gown, bare shoulders, and
arrogant manner, shocked the public and critics found the
picture eccentric and erotic. After this failure, Sargent
abandoned his hopes of establishing himself as a portrait
painter in Paris and in 1886 he moved to London. There he
became a celebrated portrait artist completing more than 500
works.
He spent most of his adult life in England and visited America
only on short trips.
